FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 2, 2008
The following statement can
be attributed to Nevada LIFE President Don Nelson
Embryonic stem cell
researchers in Britain announced that they have created a
cloned human that is an “admixture” with cow DNA.
The technique (Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer) was the same
used to produce Dolly the Sheep, but this time, cow
eggs were used instead of human eggs, creating a hybrid or
“admixture.” This experiment is an unconscionable
tampering with human life. It is obscene and
unconscionable to clone human beings and to clone hybrid
human beings with animals. This experiment takes us far
beyond Huxley’s Brave New World. Rogue science must
be stopped to prevent further tampering with and demeaning
of human life.
Why Human Cloning
and Hybrids? Some
researchers believe human cloning is necessary because
embryonic stem cell research using embryos in fertility
labs will never produce enough genetic diversity to
produce mass cures. Cloning is seen as a way of creating
patient specific embryonic stem cell matches. Clones would
be created and killed to create embryonic stem cell
matches for the donor. Human and animal cloning (somatic
cell nuclear transfer) occurs by fusing an emptied human
egg with cells from a donor. Animal eggs were used in
this experiment because there is a shortage of human eggs.
Women are not willing to undergo painful, risky surgery
and be exploited for science. The egg shortage is one
reason embryonic stem cell research and cloning is
unlikely to succeed.
These bizarre
experiments are also unnecessary.
Last year scientists learned
how to create embryonic-like (pluripotent) stem cells
without resorting to human cloning or killing human
embryos. The technique reverts a person’s ordinary stem
cells back to a pluripotent (embryonic like) state. It is
cheaper, easier, more efficient and should create a
patient specific stem cell match. It makes human cloning
and human embryonic stem cell research unnecessary. It is
so promising that Dolly the Sheep Creator Ian Wilmut and
other researchers have quit cloning to pursue this new
stem cell technique.
These
bizarre human experiments should move The United States
Senate and Harry Reid, who supports Somatic Cell Nuclear
Transfer (human cloning), to pass the Brownback-Landrieu
Human Cloning Prohibition Act to prevent this tampering
and demeaning of human life.
